Partners In Care Executive Leadership attended the
Self-Insurance Institute of America's 25th Annual National Educational
Conference and Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina from October 18th -
21st 2005. The Self-Insurance Institute of America, Inc. (SIIA) is the only national association dedicated exclusively to protecting and promoting the self-insurance and alternative risk transfer industry. Since its founding in 1981, the association has grown significantly and now includes members from virtually every state and several countries around the world. Major membership constituencies include self-insured employers (healthcare and workers' compensation), group self-insured workers' compensation funds (SIFs), third-party administrators (TPAs), managing general underwriters (MGUs), excess/stop-loss insurance carriers and a variety of other companies involved in the alternative risk transfer business. SIIA provides membership services in four primary areas: information, education, networking and legislative/regulatory representation. The association's corporate office is located in Simpsonville, South Carolina and maintains a government relations office in Washington, D.C. This conference illuminated just how much of an opportunity there is at multiple levels for the Physician Community to aggressively collaborate with the supporting infrastructure of the Self Insurance Industry. Opportunities range from health benefit management for medium to large local employers to creative alternative risk financing approaches to professional liability insurance for our member physicians. With the 800+ physicians of the PIC Network expending between $50 million - $75 million a year in benefits and insurance expenses compounded by the fact that these same physicians are undercompensated by approximately $50 million per year when compared to national norms and self insurance/alternative risk transfer now impacting between 50% - 70% of the commercial health benefits in our region, it is imperative that the physician community gain a greater understanding of this industry segment. We will be organizing the information gathered from the conference and will disseminate it via this web page. |
