Disease Management Comes to Small Employers

There are a myriad of health benefit structures, plans, and financing mechanisms available today.  Third Party Administrators must differentiate themselves without taking on excessive administrative costs or they will lose their pricing advantage.

All too often, these financial pressures are forcing cut backs in crucial programs.  Case Management is implemented to ensure Stop Loss Insurance Contract compliance but there are not enough resources to really focus on the chronic medium cost members who are not likely to ever trip an Excess Loss reporting requirement.  Disease Management programs appear great but the pricing pressure at renewal time drives that customer to eliminate the “nice to have” program at the last minute.

The PPO you have brought to your client suddenly has local holes and the PPO doesn’t have the contracting leverage to plug them affordably.  Pricing pressure from the major insurers makes the sales and client retention cycle intense.  Then a major client has cash flow issues and your customer service department is inundated with phone calls from irate providers looking to be paid.

We don’t like these shortcomings.  Remember, we are also employers and we have to navigate the same system for our families that you are frustrated about.  We have to meet payroll on very tight cash flow budgets.  We want to see the system work more effectively for our patients and for ourselves.
